In image forty four, there is repetition of hands working under light, and women all dressed in the same uniform that includes a hat of some sort and jacket like top. All of the women are sitting in rows at these tables with a pile of coffee beans in front of them. There is one woman who is looking at the camera, but it is so dark in the room, as all the light is aimed at their hands, that you can only make out her face shape and most notably her eyes. The difference between the woman looking at the camera and all the women in the photo create a binary of conformity versus individuality. The lone woman looking at the camera represents individuality as she is the only person not doing her work and is distracted by the camera. The other, approximately sixty three, women represent conformity as they are conforming to the uniform, and their work. They all look like the same person sitting next to each other working. While the one woman looking in the direction of the camera looks the same, what distincts her making her an individual is her eyes. The eyes are called the window to the soul, and her eye being the only eyes in the picture is important because they are staring directly at the viewer like she is boring into your soul as you bore into hers. She is not an invisible face among the group of women wearing the same clothes doing the same job, she is a person, her own person in the sea of the same person. The light in the image is directed at the women’s hands as they work with the coffee beans, and the rest of the women’s bodies are in shadows. The lighting of the room shows that the work that they are doing is more valuable to their employer than anything else. Their faces and bodies are in the shadows showing that who they are as people is unimportant, their individuality is put aside for work and conforming to the mold created for them by their boss. Their hands are in the light and are doing the work of sorting the coffee beans which means that the work their hands are doing is most important because it is the only thing in the light.
In image forty three, there is repetition in the two men, dressed in a similar uniform to the women in image forty four. Both men are barefoot, and holding a white sack and there are many more of those sacks on the ground. The room in this image is again dark, but there are windows bringing light in and the open door in the background. The uniforms and them being shoeless implies that they are lower class as they work in a factory and that does not even have shoes as part of the uniform. The white sacks laying on the ground imply that part of their work is to either fill the empty ones or clean them in the water that is on the ground around them. The men add to the binary of conformity versus individuality because both men are conforming to their roles as they are in their uniform and doing the same action. These two men are not showing any individuality in their movement or dress, they fit the mold of the model worker. In this image their faces are seen, but they are not striking nor are they looking at the camera like the woman in image forty four. The men fall into conformity while the one woman stands out showing that they are complacent in their position, while she is not satisfied with her job.
